The maker
Umm Hany — Potter · Fayoum · at the wheel since 1996
In Tunis village by Lake Qarun, Umm Hany is at her wheel from dawn. She digs the clay from Fayoum soil, shapes it and lets it dry in the sun before it goes into the kiln. Every piece comes out a little different from the last — which is exactly what she loves about it.
“Clay keeps the fingerprint of the hand that made it.”

So it lives with you for years
Care guide
Clay breathes, and a little care keeps it with you for years.
-
01
Wash in lukewarm water
No harsh soap or scourers — let it air-dry on its side.
-
02
Avoid heat shock
Don’t move it straight from the fridge to the flame — sudden swings in temperature crack it.
-
03
Before first use
Fill the jug and leave it a full day before drinking from it, so the clay can soak.
-
04
Glazed pieces
Food-safe, but wash them by hand rather than in the dishwasher.
