The maker
Hajj Reda — Kilim weaver · Fuwwah, Kafr El Sheikh · at the loom since 1987
Fuwwah was once a town of looms, one busy house after another. Hajj Reda learned to weave from his father at twelve, and to this day he spins and dyes the wool in the same workshop. He will tell you every kilim takes him ten days — and that good work can’t be rushed.
“A good kilim shows on its back.”

Care guide
Natural wool only gets better with time. A little care keeps it that way.
-
01
Shake it out weekly
Vacuum without the rotating brush, or give it a good shake on the balcony.
-
02
Turn it every few months
So sun and footsteps spread evenly and the colour stays even.
-
03
Treat spots straight away
Lukewarm water and mild soap on a cloth — dab, don’t rub, and let it dry in the shade.
-
04
Wash once a year
At a hand-rug cleaner. Never in the washing machine, and never dried in direct sun.
