The maker
Gamal — Coppersmith · El Gamaleya, Cairo · in the workshop since 1999
Gamal’s workshop sits in a narrow alley in El Gamaleya, a few steps from Khan el-Khalili. He hammers and pierces brass with the same tools his grandfather used, and draws every pattern on paper before he starts.
“Brass remembers every blow.”

Care guide
Brass deepens in colour over time — and if you want it bright again, that’s easy.
-
01
Dust it weekly
With a dry cloth, so dust doesn’t settle in the engraving and piercing.
-
02
Polish naturally
Lemon and salt, or vinegar and baking soda — then rinse and dry well.
-
03
Keep it away from damp
Humidity leaves green spots on brass.
