The maker
Fathia — Palm weaver · Aswan · in the workshop since 1992
Fathia learned to braid from her grandmother in a village on the Nile near Aswan. She soaks the palm fronds until they soften, then braids them by hand outside her house with her neighbours — each basket takes her a day or two.
“Palm braided right outlives its owner.”

Care guide
Palm and wicker love dry air.
-
01
Dust with a soft brush
Or a vacuum on its lowest setting, so dust doesn’t settle between the braids.
-
02
Keep it away from damp
Not in the bathroom, and not next to the sink.
-
03
If it gets wet
Dry it in the shade, not the sun, so it doesn’t warp.
